Read to A Dog Program
About the Program:
The program was developed to encourage children to read by providing a non-judgmental listener. By reading to a dog, the child builds confidence and learns to associate reading aloud with a positive experience.
-Therapy Dog International
How to participate:
Parents can register their child(ren) for one (1) 15 minute time slot to read aloud to one of the therapy dogs. You may request a time slot by calling the library at 201-768-9555. The child and the dog will work together in a quiet area of the library. Please arrive a few minutes early so you can pick out your book(s)!
Rules of the Program:
Please be mindful of the following rules for this program:
1) You must register for the program ahead of time. We cannot accommodate walk-ins for this type of event.
2) If you have more than one child you would like to register, each child must have their own individual time slot. This program is structured for a one-on-one environment. Only one child at a time per dog, with the dog's handler supervising. Parents may wait nearby.
3) Please be aware, this is not playtime with the dogs. The dogs are service animals and are there to provide a comfortable environment for reluctant readers to practice their skills. They are not here to play.
When does it start?:
The program runs every Tuesday starting on September 19th. It is a one hour program from 6:45pm-7:45pm.
